INTERLOCKING SOLUTIONS

Safety-critical interlocking solutions that coordinate rail vehicle movements with depot equipment, infrastructure and access, helping prevent unsafe operations and protect people, assets and facilities.

OVERVIEW

Safety-Critical Control Across the Depot.

Interlocking ensures that rail movements, equipment, infrastructure and access can only operate when defined safety conditions are satisfied, helping prevent conflicting or potentially unsafe operations.

FirstClass designs electronic and trapped key interlocking solutions around each facility’s equipment, operating procedures and safety requirements. Applications include points, signalling, depot doors, cranes, lifting jacks, wheel lathes, turntables, access systems and OLE/OHL.

Solutions can be delivered independently or integrated within Depot Protection and Depot Control Systems, including interfaces with existing and third-party equipment.

Status & Visualisation

Provides operators with clear visibility of interlocked equipment, system status and inhibited operations.

Bespoke Safety Logic

nterlocking sequences are developed around each facility’s equipment, operating procedures and safety requirements.

HOW IT WORKS

How Safety Interlocking Works

An interlocking monitors the status of connected equipment, infrastructure and access arrangements and automatically enforces a defined safe sequence of operations.

Before a rail movement, equipment operation or access to a hazardous area is authorised, the system confirms that all required safety conditions have been satisfied. This can include point position, door status, equipment position, personnel access and the status of OLE/OHL or other connected systems.

If a conflicting or unsafe condition exists, the relevant operation or access is prevented. FirstClass develops the interlocking logic around the facility’s risk assessments, Safe System of Work and operational procedures.

Interlocking Solutions FAQs

  • What is interlocking in a rail depot?

Interlocking uses defined safety logic to ensure required equipment, infrastructure and operational conditions are satisfied before a rail movement, equipment operation or access can proceed.

  • What is electronic interlocking?

Electronic interlocking uses programmable safety logic and connected field equipment to monitor safety conditions and automatically prevent conflicting operations or access until the required conditions are satisfied.

  • What is trapped key interlocking?

Trapped key interlocking uses a controlled sequence of key release and transfer to ensure equipment operation or access can only take place when defined safety conditions have been established.

  • Does FirstClass provide both electronic and trapped key interlocking?

Yes. FirstClass provides electronic and trapped key interlocking solutions configured around the equipment, infrastructure, operating procedures and safety requirements of the individual facility.

  • Can interlocking control access to hazardous areas?

Yes. Access gates, platforms and other controlled areas can be interlocked so that access is only permitted once required electrical, equipment and operational safety conditions have been established.

  • Can FirstClass integrate with third-party systems?

Yes. New interlocking functionality can interface with existing, legacy and third-party systems where technically appropriate.

  • Can an existing interlocking system be upgraded or modified?

Yes. FirstClass can assess existing and legacy interlocking arrangements to determine what can practically be retained, supported, modified or integrated as equipment, infrastructure and operational requirements change.

More About Interlocking Solutions

What is an Interlocking System?

An interlocking is a safety-critical control arrangement that prevents conflicting or unsafe operations by ensuring defined conditions are satisfied before an action is permitted. Within a rail depot, this can include points, infrastructure, maintenance equipment, access arrangements and other systems.

Electronic Interlocking Systems

Electronic interlocking uses programmable safety logic, control equipment and field devices to monitor defined conditions and authorise operations only when the required safety sequence has been satisfied.

Complex relationships between rail movements, depot equipment, access systems and infrastructure can be managed within a coordinated safety system. Status information and visualisation can provide operators with clear indication of equipment conditions and whether an operation is permitted or inhibited.

FirstClass develops electronic interlocking around the requirements and operating procedures of each facility, including integration with existing and third-party equipment.

Trapped Key Interlocking

Trapped key interlocking provides a robust method of controlling access and equipment operation through a predetermined sequence of key release and transfer.

Keys are released only when defined safety conditions have been established and are then used to enable the next permitted stage of an operating or access sequence. This provides a clear physical method of preventing conflicting or unsafe operations.

FirstClass designs trapped key interlocking around the equipment, access requirements and Safe System of Work of the individual facility. Solutions can be provided for new installations or incorporated into upgrades and modifications of existing and legacy depot infrastructure.

Choosing the Appropriate Interlocking Solution

Electronic and trapped key interlocking can address different operational and safety requirements. FirstClass assesses the individual application and develops electronic, trapped key or integrated interlocking arrangements appropriate to the facility, infrastructure and required operating sequence.

Depot Equipment Interlocking

FirstClass can provide interlocking with equipment including depot doors, lifting jacks, turntables, wheel lathes, bogie drops, hoists and cranes, heaters, pit lighting, access gates, train washes, fuelling systems and shore supplies and other relevant depot equipment.

OLE/OHL Interlocking

Where a depot incorporates overhead line equipment, FirstClass can integrate OLE/OHL status with relevant access and maintenance equipment, including fixed and mobile access platforms, Mansafe equipment, hoists, cranes and lifting jacks.

Integration with Existing, Legacy & Third-Party Systems

FirstClass can assess existing and legacy infrastructure, equipment and interfaces to determine what can practically be retained, supported, modified or integrated. New safety functionality can be introduced and interfaced with existing or third-party systems where technically appropriate, helping avoid unnecessary replacement when extending or modifying operational depots.
