DEPOT CONTROL / LOCALLY OPERATED POINTS SYSTEMS (LOPS)

Integrated Depot Control and Locally Operated Points Systems providing safe, reliable control of points, routes and rail vehicle movements within depots and maintenance facilities.

OVERVIEW

Safe & Efficient Depot Movement Control

Depot Control Systems and Locally Operated Points Systems (LOPS) provide safe, controlled operation of points and routes within rail depots, sidings and maintenance facilities, supporting efficient rail vehicle movements while reducing reliance on manual point operation.

FirstClass designs systems from individual locally operated points through to sophisticated automated depot-wide control, incorporating powered points, route setting, position detection, signalling, SCADA and safety interlocking.

Designed around each facility’s infrastructure and operating procedures, systems can be delivered for new-build projects or used to automate, integrate, upgrade and extend existing and legacy depot control infrastructure.

KEY FEATURES

Safe, reliable control of points, routes and rail vehicle movements.

Safe Points Control

Provides controlled operation of depot points with clear indication of position and status.

Automated Route Control

Enables safe, efficient route setting and automated movement control where required.

SCADA Control

Provides operators with clear system status, control, alarms and operational information.

Safety Interlocking

Interlocks points, routes and associated systems to prevent conflicting or unsafe movements.

Degraded Mode Operation

Controlled manual override functionality can support continued operation during defined degraded conditions.

Flexible System Design

From individual LOPS installations to sophisticated automated depot-wide control systems.

HOW IT WORKS

How Depot Control & LOPS Work

Depot Control and Locally Operated Points Systems (LOPS) allow authorised users to control points and routes while monitoring the infrastructure required for safe rail vehicle movements.

Depending on the application, points can be operated locally or incorporated into a wider automated control system. Position detection and safety interlocking confirm the required route before an associated movement proceeds.

Systems can incorporate SCADA, authorised-user security, degraded-mode operation, vehicle detection and signalling, while interfacing with other depot safety systems and, where required, mainline systems to provide coordinated movement control.

FAQs about Depot Control / Locally Operated Points Systems (LOPS)

More About Depot Control & Locally Operated Points Systems

What is a Depot Control System?

A Depot Control System supports the safe movement of rail vehicles through points and routes within a depot or sidings environment. Systems can range from simple point control through to sophisticated automated solutions incorporating route setting, SCADA, signalling, vehicle detection and safety interlocking.

What is a Locally Operated Points System (LOPS)?

A Locally Operated Points System enables authorised personnel to operate powered points from a suitable local control position rather than manually operating points at track level. LOPS can operate independently or form part of a wider Depot Control or integrated Depot Operations System.

From Local Control to Depot-Wide Automation

FirstClass systems can range from individual locally controlled points to centralised, automated systems controlling multiple routes. Where required, automated movement control can be configured around agreed operational requirements and timetables. SCADA can provide operators with a clear overview of the depot, while secure login restricts control functionality to authorised personnel.

Integration with Existing & Mainline Systems

FirstClass can integrate with existing and legacy depot infrastructure and approved track equipment and, where required, interface depot control with mainline systems. The system can also exchange status and control information with Depot Protection Systems, Personnel Warning Systems, signalling, vehicle detection and other relevant infrastructure.

Degraded Mode & Operational Resilience

Systems can incorporate defined degraded-mode functionality, including controlled manual override facilities, allowing authorised operators to manage appropriate scenarios in accordance with agreed operating procedures.

Integrated Depot Operations Systems

Where both protection and movement control are required, FirstClass can combine Depot Protection Systems and Depot Control functionality within an integrated Depot Operations System. Bringing the systems together reduces unnecessary interfaces between separate platforms and provides coordinated control of personnel protection, points, routes, signalling and rail vehicle movements.

Upgrading Existing Depot Control Systems

FirstClass can assess existing and legacy points, control equipment and interfaces to determine what can practically be retained, supported, modified or integrated before developing an upgrade or extension solution. New control functionality can be introduced while retaining and interfacing with existing or third-party systems where appropriate.
