In early August we mobilised 3 Specialist Engineers to go offshore. They will complete the Fuel Gas Phase II modification works on the Emergency Shutdown Systems for Rockrose Energy, following their acquisition of Brae field from Marathon Oil.
The Project
The design for the project was started back in 2017. We have worked with Rockrose Energy around operational requirements over this period. We have completed 9 offshore installation visits with minimal interruption to the platform’s day to day running and non-operational activities offshore.
The History
The modification is required because Brae Alpha is approaching fuel gas deficiency during normal, steady operation and is already gas deficient during start-up. Previously, import gas on Brae Alpha was supplied by Brae Bravo. This ranged in pressure between 40barg and 60barg. However, an alternative supply of gas to Brae Alpha is required following cessation of production at Brae Bravo in Q2 2018 and the planned cessation at East Brae in 2020. A Brae Bravo bypass will enable a supply of gas to/from Brae Alpha from East Brae (prior to CoP) or SAGE. This will operate at SAGE conditions, typically 130barg with a range of 106barg to 172barg.
Work Completed
Our team of highly skilled and experienced Engineers have undertaken extensive changes to the 40-year-old SIL rated Emergency Shutdown Systems. Using a combination of existing hardware and integration of a modern SIL 2 PLC solution where the existing hardware capacity had been exhausted. The modifications to the system were made operationally functional back in May 2019, as a result of the previous 8 visits. Before this final offshore visit which will see the pre-engineered system changes to the original interfaces. The now redundant field equipment interfaces will be removed from the system to eliminate potential failure points during this visit.
