Etihad Rail – Al Faya Operations & Maintenance Facility

Depot Protection for a Major International Rail Programme

FirstClass Safety & Control was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a bespoke Depot Protection System for Etihad Rail at the Al Faya Operations & Maintenance facility in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The project demonstrates FirstClass’s ability to apply its rail safety and control expertise internationally, developing a solution around the operational, technical and environmental requirements of a major rail facility.

The Requirement

Al Faya forms part of the infrastructure supporting Etihad Rail’s expanding national railway network.

The Operations & Maintenance facility required a Depot Protection System capable of helping protect personnel working around rail vehicle movements while operating reliably within the demanding climatic conditions experienced in Abu Dhabi.

The solution also needed to meet the project’s functional safety requirements and integrate with the ICSS as part of the wider facility design.

Early Design Collaboration

FirstClass became involved during the design development of the facility, working with specialist railway engineering consultancy GESTE Engineering.

This early involvement enabled the Depot Protection System requirements to be considered as part of the wider depot environment rather than as a standalone system introduced later in the programme.

FirstClass subsequently worked with the VINCI Construction and Archirodon joint venture responsible for delivery of the facility.

This collaborative approach enabled the protection solution to be developed around both the operational requirements of the depot and the wider project interfaces.

The FirstClass Solution

FirstClass designed and manufactured a bespoke Depot Protection System for the Al Faya facility.

The system was developed to provide controlled protection for personnel working within designated depot areas, managing the relationship between personnel access and rail vehicle movements.

A key consideration throughout the design was ensuring that the equipment and system architecture were appropriate for the environmental conditions in which they would operate.

Engineering for a Challenging Environment

The climatic conditions in Abu Dhabi presented requirements substantially different from those typically encountered on UK depot projects.

The Depot Protection System therefore needed to be designed for operation in extreme temperatures while continuing to meet the required safety and performance criteria.

The solution was engineered to maintain the project’s SIL2 functional safety requirements while accommodating these demanding environmental conditions.

This combination of functional safety, environmental engineering and depot protection demonstrates the adaptability of the FirstClass approach to different railway environments and international standards.

International Project Delivery

The Al Faya project also required FirstClass to work as part of an international project team involving consultants, contractors and the end customer.

From early design engagement through manufacture and installation, FirstClass provided specialist Depot Protection System knowledge as part of the wider delivery programme.

The project demonstrates the ability to collaborate with Tier 1 contractors, engineering consultants and international rail organisations to incorporate depot protection into major infrastructure programmes.

The Outcome

The Al Faya Operations & Maintenance facility provides an important international reference for FirstClass Safety & Control.

The project demonstrates how proven rail safety and control principles can be adapted to different operational environments, climatic conditions and project requirements.

Through early design collaboration, bespoke engineering and integration with the wider facility, FirstClass delivered a Depot Protection System designed around the specific requirements of Etihad Rail and its Abu Dhabi maintenance operations.

It also demonstrates FirstClass’s capability to support international rail projects from its UK base, without the need for a local office, from design development through to system manufacture, installation and delivery.
