Integrated Depot Protection and Control across TfW’s largest maintenance depot
Transport for Wales (TfW) has progressively upgraded and enhanced safety and operational control at Canton Train Maintenance Depot through a bespoke FirstClass Safety & Control solution combining Depot Protection and Depot Control Systems.
Canton is TfW’s largest train maintenance depot and supports the inspection, maintenance, heavy overhaul and stabling of a diverse fleet of rolling stock.
The Requirement
With multiple maintenance buildings, stabling roads and operational areas across a busy depot, TfW required a solution capable of providing effective personnel protection while improving the control and coordination of vehicle movements.
Rather than treating individual areas in isolation, FirstClass has worked with TfW over a number of years to progressively develop an integrated, site-wide solution that can be expanded and adapted as the depot evolves.
A Multi-Year Programme
- 2023 – Stores Building Depot Protection System
- 2024 – Roads 1–20, stabling yard roads, Underframe Cleaning Building and Ground Wheel Lathe Building
- 2025 – Third-party interlocking upgrades and additional movement control functionality
- 2026 – Bogie Drop Building
This phased approach has enabled new facilities and functionality to be incorporated while maintaining integration with the wider depot protection and control architecture.
The FirstClass Solution
The combined Depot Protection and Depot Control solution extends across the Canton site and incorporates more than 40 panel enclosures.
12 sets of manual points have been upgraded to automatic operation with obstruction detection technology, helping to reduce manual handling and improve shunter safety.
RFID technology supports operative logging and movement control.
A site-wide supervisory control system provides operators with site-wide status of the Depot Protection and Depot Control systems. The Supervisory System also integrates both driver departure board technology and a driver login facility to assist driver management on the depot.
Integration & Technical Capability
A key element of the Canton solution is its ability to integrate depot protection and control with other equipment and operational systems.
Electrical RFID and mechanical interlocking solutions have been incorporated with equipment including heaters, gantry access, shore supplies, battery chargers, depot doors, Not to Be Moved boards and wheel scotches/chocks.
The system also incorporates zonal working using internal signals and protection devices, together with automatic and manually operated derailers designed to accommodate different rail types and operational processes across the depot.
This integrated approach helps ensure that access, equipment operation and vehicle movements can be appropriately controlled as part of the wider depot safety system.
The Outcome
The progressive development of the Canton system has created an integrated Depot Protection and Depot Control solution across multiple operational areas of TfW’s largest maintenance depot.
By combining personnel protection, movement control, automatic points, derailers, RFID, interlocking and supervisory control within a coordinated architecture, the solution helps protect people, assets and infrastructure while supporting more efficient day-to-day depot operations.
Importantly, the system has been developed to evolve with the depot. New facilities, equipment and operational requirements can be incorporated into the wider control and protection environment rather than being treated as isolated systems, as demonstrated by the integration of the new Bogie Drop facility at the depot in 2026.
